News Update

Dear Colleague

This is a circular communication and to those existing clients who have already communicated their Autumn 2008 requirements I thank you. The response has been fantastic and it has been good to hear that so many businesses continue to do well in these difficult times.

Much to my surprise Acorn enjoyed a record month in July and our new service Skills Provision has been well received. Acorn is undoubtedly having to explore different techniques to satisfy customer requirements but at the end of the day you only get out of life what you put into it.

With the continued weakness of the £ we are only able to secure the right people by paying the going rate and this is painful for certain sectors operating on narrow margins.

However we would argue that the
premiums involved are
highly cost effective
and would cite the recent experience
of one of our clients.

Feeling unable to afford higher rates and the difficulty of continuity of supply at the rate on offer they reverted to UK recruitment based on cost and availability.

zloty pound graph

Within a month they reverted to our model that is, on the top line more expensive,
but when weighed against...

• Reliability
• Flexibility
• Productivity
• Willingness to work overtime at flat rate

...they realised the premiums were more than self financing.

If there are any more potential clients holding back worrying about the effects of the recession but knowing that extra staff are likely to be required please email me. I will call you back and have a chat without any form of commitment. We will judge between us whether it would be appropriate to include your likely needs in our national advertising campaign.

From my last visit I fulfilled all but two jobs where I had specific orders but it is undoubtedly taking longer to get the right people. That is why this reminder is being sent. I am also being asked by other agencies to help them source labour but I much prefer direct customer contact and attempting to build business together over the medium term.

Acorn prides itself in trying to get the right people in the right places and the key is getting the job description right. I am happy to receive job descriptions in any shape or form but without one it isn’t practical to try and find people.

As it is the holiday period  I appreciate a number of you will be away but hope that colleagues may access your email in your absence and direct it to the correct decision maker.

Just to keep you in the picture the latest list of VIP candidates is available here.

I’m afraid it is very much a first come, first served approach and many candidates never make the list as they are snapped up by existing clients. So it is
very important to register your interest to receive regular up dates. To do so please use the contact details below.

I am on holiday from the 9th -16th August.

Off on holiday?

Autumn recruitment needs known?

Labour is getting very tight and it won’t get easier.

Welcome to the Acorn Recruitment South West monthly newsletter.

This month is another special, reporting on a recruitment drive that took place in Poland at the end of June to boost the numbers of available labour.

It gives you a chance to gain exposure to national advertising by advising us of any labour needs.

It is also the announcement of another recruitment drive to take place in late September. Please read on.

Exchange rates

This graph shows historical exchange rates between the Polish Zloty (PLN) and the

More bad news, the weak £ continues to reduce the attractiveness of the UK in the global village for labour.
Example: Looking for Welders and able to offer £9 an hour for non-English speakers, but they are going to the Netherlands at £13 an hour and with English get
free accommodation
.

"Skills Provision" - Announcement of a new service from Acorn Recruitment South West

We are getting an increased number of enquiries for higher level jobs with specific skill requirements. This calls for a more detailed, analytical and longer term approach to finding these skills from abroad as there is still a skills shortage in many industries in this country. Skills Provision will only be available for jobs paying £30,000 pa or the hourly equivalent. Read more >

Basically everybody, bar three found in Poland on the recent drive will be working in the UK by mid August. This is a curate's egg. Good that existing clients are largely getting what they want, bad as Acorn has very limited stock available for new clients but it is totally consistent with the market and as predicted since the beginning of 2008.

You need to plan ahead more than ever!

State of the temporary labour market

This pool of labour is of the lowest quality and hence lowest price but is populated in the main by those that are unable to get work elsewhere whatever their nationality. The true cost of this type of labour is high. At the best of times, it is inefficient, unreliable and transient as companies try to manage other people’s rejects. It is fine for the odd one or two people but is madness when users rely on it for core labour in times of tightening market conditions.

So what do you do about it?

food factory worker Case Study
• Examine your temporary labour use.
• Establish minimum levels of use
• Look to convert these levels into full time staff as soon as possible
• Examine ways of flexing working times. You will find Eastern European staff more flexible and willing to work longer hours if required , probably a typical 10-15% buffer here.
Plan ahead.
When labour can be sourced it is now taking longer – 4-6 weeks typically.
