Tough times ahead for Exeter and Plymouth

Sectors important to our local economy like agriculture and tourism have been steady and have benefited from the weakness of sterling. Cornwall has reversed 40 years of decline, Exeter has not lost its air of confidence and, as with Plymouth, the impact of recession has been cushioned to date by public sector employment. Though there have been significant job losses, particularly in manufacturing.

So things are not going to get easier. The huge reduction in public spending will mean a reduction in public sector employment, and both Exeter and Plymouth have significant public sectors. Estimates for Plymouth point to 6,000 to 8,000 job losses over the next few years.
