One of Marlborough’s biggest employers says it has been forced to relocate as there is nowhere big enough to accommodate it in the town as the only spare land has been bought up by supermarket giants.
Microlights, which makes light fittings for shops and offices, is now moving its business and its 80 jobs from Elcot Lane to Swindon.
Managing director Chris Brown said the firm had been looking at land on Marlborough Business Park which had been snapped up by Tesco and land on the nearby former station site which was acquired by Sainsburys.
“It is with regret that we have to move but we will be taking everybody with us,” said the managing director.
Finance director Alex Blair said: “It’s a shame because Marlborough is a fantastic place where the staff have been able to walk into the town.”
Microlights products light up chain stores including Monsoon, Next and Tesco Express and all over Europe, including Russia, and in the Middle and Far East.
The inability of local councils to directly help local businesses is one of the greatest challenges to be faced and whilst this particular move has not cost jobs it will reduce the money spent in Marlborough as it loses one of the few truly international businesses in the town.
